The quest for sustainability has led to groundbreaking innovations in the food industry. One such pioneering effort is delivered by Revyve, B.V., a forward-thinking food-tech company dedicated to substituting traditional egg-based components with yeast-based food ingredients. To obtain the unique functional properties of those ingredients, the texture and thus the processing — “the Revyve Magic” — needs to be just right. In this context, the collaboration of Revyve with Baumer has proven to be key. This case study delves into the synergy between Revyve and Baumer, illustrating how precise sensing delivers the desired results and drives sustainable food production.

The challenge

Revyve is an innovative food technology company that develops sustainable, yeast-based texturizing ingredients. These ingredients serve as functional alternatives to traditional egg-based components in a wide range of food applications, meeting the growing demand for cleaner, more sustainable food options. In 2024, Revyve launched its first-of-a-kind (FOAK) manufacturing plant, with a production capacity of 200 tons. The company has also expanded its commercial pipeline and secured significant purchase orders. Revyve offer food producers a sustainable, clean-label, allergen-free and price-stable alternative to traditional egg-based ingredients.

The team faced the challenge of finding sensors that could not only meet the stringent requirements for food safety but also adapt to and operate reliably in a variety of media and conditions without frequent recalibrations.

The solution

Revyve chose Baumer, a globally recognized sensor solution provider known for its high-precision technology, to handle the multifaceted demands of their production process. Their sensors are employed for temperature and level measurement from the stage of feedstock receiving to the final product storage.

Temperature monitoring: Accurate and reliable temperature control is crucial for the quality and safety of Revyve’s products. Liam McCarthy from Revyve explains, “This is really important for us as accurate temperature measurement is part of our food safety management system.” In the evaluation process, sensors from multiple leading sensor providers were tested, including products of sensor expert Baumer. The outstanding performance of their accuracy class AA (also known as class 1/3B) model TE2 sensors finally convinced McCarthy, who states that the sensor provides the consistent performance they seek to ensure that every batch meets the company’s high standards.

Point level detection: Baumer CleverLevel sensors like the PL20H are known for their ease of use. The automatic parametrization and versatile media detection capabilities, particularly in challenging media, such as foamy or sticky substances, also tipped the scales for McCarthy: “That makes our lives easier. Without worrying, we can plug and play the sensor, and it will teach itself on the media.” This seamless adjustment to various media types reduces the need for human intervention and manual switching.

Revyve has found Baumer sensors to be the perfect choice, praising that “these instruments are compact, robust, simple to install, and provide headache-free operation.” As a result, Baumer sensors have been established as the new company-wide standard for both level and temperature measurement at Revyve.

Conclusion

Revyve and Baumer showcase a successful partnership that serves Revyve’s mission to provide the much sought-after solution for yeast-based, natural texturizing ingredients by leveraging precise sensor technology, underlying its importance in modern food production. Together, Revyve and Baumer are paving the way for a tastier and more sustainable future.
